Founded in 2023, Hobart TMS was the first outpatient TMS clinic in all Tasmania.

Our team of well-reputed psychiatrists consists of Dr Marzena Rybak, Dr Yvonne Turnier-Shea and Prof Saxby Pridmore and brings decades of experience in the field of TMS.

We take pride in being pioneers who introduced the first TMS machine to Australia back in 1995. We have since been actively involved in TMS research and treatment provision whilst publishing widely.

Amongst other achievements we are able to claim, that we established and ran the first private TMS service in Australia at the former St Helen’s Private Hospital.

As many of you know, TMS is a highly effective and non-invasive treatment for individuals suffering from treatment resistant Major Depression (MDD).

With the recent introduction of Medicare item numbers for TMS provision patients can now benefit from a lifetime total of 50 available TMS sessions. Additionally, we welcome patients covered by WC, MAIB or DVA provided they have approval for psychiatric treatment.

Each course consists of 20-35 sessions, and this opportunity is specifically available for patients who have not previously undergone TMS treatment. Additionally, we welcome privately funded patients, as well as patients covered by WC or MAIB insurance plans, provided they have received approval for TMS treatment.

As a specialist treatment center, we do require referrals from GPs or other specialists. Patients will then be invited to attend a one-hour assessment consultation with one of our psychiatrists free of additional charge. The psychiatrist will also provide monitoring sessions during the course of treatment to assure individual tailoring of patients to the treatment.

Whilst there are exclusion criteria such as a history of epilepsy, cochlear implants, metal plates in or around the head area and weight exceeding 130kgs (due to equipment stipulation), we encourage patients to inquire further about their eligibility.
Patients qualifying for treatment will be responsible for a small gap payment for each treatment session. Health care card holders will be bulk-billed, i.e. will not have to pay any gaps.
Our psychiatrist will provide regular reviews whilst you are undergoing TMS treatment, however, it is important to note, that psychiatric follow-up is not provided post completion of TMS treatment with our service.
